As mentioned a few weeks ago, Kingston FC withdrew from the CSL this season. The story that came out over the next few days was that the team had applied to the Ontario Soccer Association in an attempt to enter League1 Ontario as a second eastern Ontario team after the Kingston Clippers.

Today, the organization announced that they are working toward a move into the OSA structure as an OSA Recognized Non-Club Academy (ORNCA).

The organization started a youth soccer program in the spring of 2014 as the Kingston City Soccer Academy and began transitioning to a more organized academy structure in the fall of that year.

They announced today that they have two applications pending with the OSA, the first for a League1 Ontario franchise for the Quinte-Belleville region to begin in April 2016 and the second to seek ORNCA status as the Kingston-Belleville FC Pro Soccer Academy. They hope to hear back in the near future on both applications, stating that, "We understand that an OSA determination on accreditation for our
Kingston-Belleville FC Pro Soccer Academy may be forthcoming within the
next week or two. Our application is now complete and has been
thoroughly reviewed by the OSA Technical and Standards teams. We are
very hopeful and confident that we will become the first Academy in the
region to meet the rigorous standards for OSA ORNCA Academy
accreditation."

If approved, the club would aim to begin operations as a recognized academy immediately with the goal of fielding a men's League1 Ontario team based out of Quinte-Belleville for the 2016 season. A women's League1 Ontario team would hopefully follow in 2017. Lorne Abugov, the chairman, stated, "We have told the OSA and League1 Ontario that a new franchise in
Quinte-Belleville should be conditional on our group securing local and
regional ownership from the very start. If Belleville and the region
want a pro soccer franchise, it will be up to local investors and
business sponsors to come forward and work with us."Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-82885027094482256942015-04-15T09:48:00.003-04:002015-04-15T19:55:40.400-04:00L1O: Kingston Clippers schedule announced (Updated)

It was quietly announced in a Canadian Soccer League press release this weekend that Kingston FC would not be returning to the CSL for the 2015 season.

The CSL press release simply states that "two teams from last year’s CSL First Division – North York Astros and
Kingston FC – will not be returning for the coming season, for a net
increase of two teams. Each team will play 22 games."

It goes on to indicate that "the upcoming CSL Second Division will consist of reserve teams only" strongly suggesting that there will also be no Kingston FC II participating this season.

Kingston FC has been contacted for comment, and if one is received, the story will be updated. As a quick summary, that article states that, yes there is a place, but at a certain point, those clubs will need to either combine or affiliate with another club to ensure the proper levels of development and standards.

As anything related to soccer here in Canada often does, this led to a discussion about how it could, would, and should apply up here in the so-called "frozen north". The big issues that arose were specifically that there are different levels of services expected between smaller and larger clubs and that the political and economic reasons for larger clubs tend to be outweighed by their lack of developmental benefits. Typically, the larger a club, the more inefficient it is and the oversight and accountability becomes more difficult to manage, much like we often see here in Ontario with the OSA↣District↣Club chain.

Here in the Greater Kingston area, there are four large clubs, and a number of smaller ones that fall under the OSA structure. The four main clubs are Cataraqui Clippers Soccer Club (CCSC), Kingston United Soccer Club (KUSC), Greater Kingston Senior Soccer Association (GKSSA - men's), and Kingston Women's Soccer Club (KWSC). While the two adult clubs focus exclusively on adult recreational play (the equivalent of the old level 7 "house league"), the two youth clubs spread themselves between recreational play and competitive play in the OSA's pyramid of play, right up to the League1 Ontario level for the Clippers.

While there have been suggestions of merges on and off between various clubs in the area over the past several years, as far as I know, there has never been a serious discussion between any of them about actually attempting to implement such a strategy. During this time, I've done a lot of reading on various forums and groups discussing the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) implementation, standards of training, and so forth. This combined with some discussion along the way with those who have far more knowledge than me of both the system and player development has led me to the basic designs of how an umbrella club might work in the Kingston area to best develop players to compete at the highest levels possible (whether university level or even professionally).

The key to such a design is understanding that the club needs to offer a multi-stream environment in order to be successful. Some players want to develop and compete at those high levels while others simply want to play the game with their friends. When players get to the adult ages, those priorities change even further, depending on skill level, family situations, and time available.

An overview of the multi-stream concept in club organization terms

With these basic streams, a player would join the club at an early age, join a "little kickers" type of program, then as they develop to U8 level (or thereabouts), they would move into either higher level development streams or recreational streams, depending on the player's aptitude and interest levels. Players would not be locked into a single stream, but would be able to move from one to the other, as players develop at different ages, and sometimes gain or lose interest in playing at the level they are at.

How a player might move through the full club

Once a player has moved into one of the streams, they would work through that stream toward the "end" (the "soccer for life" bit described by the Canadian Soccer Association). Of course, as noted, players could move between streams, whether from the recreational to the high level development, or even to the OPDL group, depending on their aptitude, desire, and commitment.

So, how is this different from your typical club that potentially provides all of this already to a player? First off, there would be a technical advisory board that works together to oversee all of the streams. Of course, this is not something that a single technical director or club head coach could even dream of handling. As such, there would be a "technical lead" for each step along the way, all of whom work together on the technical advisory board, which would be led by the club's technical director.

At the youth development stage, someone who excels at working with kids between the ages of three and seven would lead the way into the upper levels of the club. As we all know, we learn differently at varying ages. When I was three, I had the attention span of a gnat, games were good, and if I was playing for more than 30-45 minutes in a structured activity, I often managed to quickly find the monkey bars or sandbox. That's no different from kids of that age now. As such, they need someone trained to design a curriculum and be (and this is the most important part) able to teach it in such a way that it engages them and teaches them the skills that they'll need come the next level of their development.

That next major step is the U8-U12 grouping. I've (intentionally) lumped that all in to one U8-U18 grouping above, because the overall portion of these ages at the high level development and recreational levels is the same, simply with different things taught at different levels (as per the CSA and OSA curriculum). There would be a technical lead for each of these two levels, both with an eye to seeing who might benefit from changing from one stream to another. These two leads, along with the OPDL/League1 technical lead, would be typically working as a team, interacting with each other and moving back and forth between the two groups to ensure that as many players as possible at playing at the level best suited to them.

As noted, there would also be a technical lead for the ODPL group (which would eventually culminate in the League1 teams), and this lead would rely on the high level and recreational leads to find the appropriate players to fit their system.

So, how does this improve on things? First off, there's far more focus on advancement of the player, and far less on advancement of a "team". Secondly, there's a focus on building a consistent system and style of play across the entire club. Finally, there's no more competing with other groups for players and teams to compete.

Right now, the district directs which club will field what age levels in district and regional competition, and thus each club must compete for players of those age levels, not all of whom have played similar systems and styles of play (for example, one club may focus on ball control and fast passes, similar to Pep Gardiola Barcelona teams, while another may focus on defending and counter attacks similar to the Jose Mourinho Chelsea teams).

The next big thing to address is the inefficiencies in the system and this is where things start getting a bit more complicated. In the initial diagram above, there is a top level board of directors for the entire club, and they oversee the entire club structure. Underneath that board, each major stream would have a small group of directors or admins that would oversee the stream in terms of budgeting, scheduling, and so forth. The various financial people for each stream would get together on a financial committee and compile the budgets to present to the club board, the schedulers would work together, and so forth. In essence, each stream would almost be its own "sub-club" of the larger club, with its own standards, levels of service, budgets, and so forth, but there would be a single club identity and a single direction forward.

The main point of failure in such a venture is, as often seems to be the case in youth soccer these days, when adult ego, especially on the administrative side of things, gets in the way. Parent egos are fairly easily handled by the multi-tier system. The technical leads of each stream would be working together to determine the best places for a player to develop, even if that means practicing with a high level development group, but playing with the recreational group in order to increase playing time and opportunity. As long as the technical leads can work together without ego getting in the way – because the end goal should be developing players that can compete at the top levels... not putting together a U16 team that can win a trophy locally but is cannot compete with anyone else.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-40363893108753356162014-08-11T15:08:00.001-04:002014-08-14T17:31:31.634-04:00Queen's Men's Soccer Coach hunt still on...? It's less than a week away from OUA training camps opening, including the Queen's camps here in Kingston. And yet the Queen's men's soccer team seems no closer to having a head coach in place.

Chris Gencarelli stepped down at the start of June after four years in charge of the team. During his tenure, he won the OUA East Coach of the Year in 2012, the year he led the squad to a first place finish in their division with an 11-1-2 record.

Gencarelli led the team to a winning record in each of his four seasons, finishing in 4th place in the OUA East in 2013, his final season. During his tenure, he set the course for a strong program, as evidenced by the Gaels' record, and had a solid foundation for the future in place, but felt the need to focus on his teaching career moving forward.

Stories and rumours have been rampant about who might become the new coach of the team, but nothing has come out of the Queen's Athletics program since posting the job position a couple of days after Gencarelli's resignation.

Some local soccer coaching personalities that have been rumoured to be in line for the job include Clippers' TD Chris Eveleigh, currently coaching the Clippers League1 Ontario team (in addition to his other duties as technical director); Jason Massie, Clippers' assistant TD and assistant coach (and player) on the League1 Ontario team; and Mike Akai, assistant coach of the CSL's Kingston FC, and assistant coach with RMC's men's team across the causeway.

Despite all three names being bandied about, no decision has been announced by Queen's, something that has left some of the players confused and worried as the season approaches. At this time, the assistant coaches from last season, Scott Compeau and David Crabb (also KUSC's president), are expected to run the training camp when it begins on Monday, August 18th, and hopefully, for the good of the program, a head coach will be announced in the coming days.

Especially with the OUA season kicking off their regular season on August 31st at RMC.

Update: This afternoon (Thursday, August 14), Queen's announced that Christian Hoefler (ex-Ottawa Fury FC) will be taking control of the team for the 2014 season, with Scott Compeau returning as an assistant for his second season and past player Daniel McBride joining for his first season as an assistant.
The weekend's events started off with photo days for both the Kingston United and Cataraqui Clippers house league teams, taking place at Polson Park Public School and the Invista Centre respectively. In case you were wondering why those parts of town were so busy with little kids running around in Timbits outfits all day...

The Cataraqui Clippers were also hosting the West Rouge Storm at the Invista Centre for a U17 OYSL clash just after 2pm Saturday. I was acting as the first assistant referee for this game, one marked by a fair bit of physical play from two teams trying to find their first win of the season. Clippers were playing quite short as a number of their players were playing with Holy Cross SS in the OFSAA AAA tournament in North Bay, where they came away with a bronze medal, finishing behind St. Michael and Corpus Christi. Holy Cross finished second in their pool despite losing their first two games, and lost on penalties to the eventual winners, St. Michael, after a high scoring 3-3 game.

The OYSL game finished 1-0 for West Rouge on a bit of a scrappy goal late in the game. Unfortunately, one of the Clippers players was injured in a collision with one of the West Rouge fullbacks, and another was dismissed from the game in the dying seconds. Despite that, Clippers had several fantastic chances throughout the game, and were unlucky to give up the goal and take the loss.
After the OYSL game was complete, I headed down to St. Lawrence College for the League1 Ontario game between the Cataraqui Clippers and TFC Academy. TFC Academy were coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw in the opening week where both goals were scored inside the first 15 minutes of the match. Clippers, on the other hand, lost 3-0 despite having a lot of the play in the game, but made three costly mistakes defensively.

My writeup of the game for the League1 Ontario site covers most of the game. I was able to work with the officiating crew of the game in my reporting role, sitting near the fourth official. As such, I was able to hear the interactions between the officials, the teams, and be on top of substititions, game incidents, and otherwise. It was a fascinating experience, especially from an amateur referee's point of view. I'd worked with two of the game's officials previously too. Brian Butler was AR1, and he worked through a portion of his officiating career locally before moving up to Toronto a few years back. Armando Pereira worked as the fourth official, and he and I had both refereed the other when we both played in the TSSL a number of years ago. Scott Decker (referee) and Alex Themistocleous (AR2) rounded out the officiating crew.

The game finished 1-1 between the two teams and featured a number of cautions, but no dismissals. Marco Rodriguez, captain of TFC Academy, scored on a nice 35-yard free kick just inside the 20th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead. In the 62nd minute Oliver Coren restored the deadlock, scoring on a penalty kick. After the match, Coren stated that he wanted to score the first goal for the team and was thrilled to have had the opportunity to do so. Clippers coach Chris Eveleigh commented that he was proud of his team when they came out fighting in the second half and how they kept their heads up after giving up the goal. On the other bench, head coach Michael Stefano made the comment that his goals with the TFC Academy team were long-term and that the maturity, inexperience, and youth of his squad in comparison with Clippers was something that played a large role in the game.

Clippers play their next game this Friday night at 8:30pm at the Invista Centre in a cup match against ANB Futbol, a team they will also play on Sunday in Vaughan at the OSA's Soccer Centre at 6pm in league play. The cup game will be the first of four with the second coming on Friday, August 1st at 8:30pm at St. Lawrence College vs Internacional De Toronto before playing away on Thursday, August 7th at 8:30pm at the Oshawa Civic Stadium against Durham FC and finally Saturday, September 27th at 1pm at the KIA Training Ground against the TFC Academy.
On Sunday, both Kingston FC squads were playing, both out of town. The reserves found themselves in Milton where they downed Milton SC by a 5-1 scoreline, with Mademba Ba scoring a hat trick and Stephane Assengue adding a brace. In the first division game in North York, the North York Astros fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game 3-3. Guillaume Surot scored a penalty early for his fifth goal of the young season, while Paul Willis and Catalin Lichioiu also tallied goals, becoming the first two players besides Surot to score in 2014. Joe Zupo, past Queen's captain, was cautioned in the first minute of play and forced to leave the game at halftime due to a foot injury.
Tonight, the Kingston United Premier Women head up to Ottawa to play Ottawa South United at Lytle Park West with an 8:30pm kickoff. The women are looking to rebound from a disappointing 3-2 loss to Gloucester United last weekend in their home opener. They are also working to arrange a
Last year, Bob Machin moved his top-level Kingston women's team from the Ontario Women's Soccer League (OWSL) to the Ottawa-Carleton Soccer League (OCSL) into the premier division, where they finished in third place behind the Falcons Fury and Gloucester, twelve points off the pace of the two leading teams.

After an off-season requiring replacements of almost half of the team's players, the team is ready to compete for the OCSL Women's Premier title in 2014.

Playing their home games out at the brand new John Machin turf field off of Highway 15, Bob Machin feels that there will be more competition this season as compared to 2013. He felt that the level of competition last year was a bit weaker than the OWSL when they played there in 2012, with only the top four teams being able to compete in the OCSL 2013, but fully expects that the level of competition will have increased this year, with the top six all being able to win the title in 2014.

With only ten of eighteen players returning from the 2013 team, Bob and his coaching staff of Marco Giacomello (Queen's Women's assistant coach), Dimitri Senis, and Bernie Harpell have had to do a fair bit of recruiting, and they've tried to focus on local players wherever possible. This goal is succeeding as eight of the team's players are home grown and the entire U21 Eastern Regional Soccer League (ERSL) team that Machin and Harpell run partly as a reserve squad is entirely from the local district.

Some of these recruits include goalkeeper Nicolle Gaudet, St. Lawrence College's starting goalkeeper this past season and the SLC women's basketball 2013-14 MVP, who is expected to be the team's regular goalkeeper for the season. She joins three other St Lawrence players in Maureen Frost, Jessie Pennock, and Hailey Perrault, who will be attending Carleton University this fall. They are joined by eight current and former players from the Queen's women's team: Brittany Almeida, Jessie Deboer, Micah Vermeer, Britt Snell, Alyssa Fenuta, Jackie Tessier, Kelli Chamberlain, and Riley Fillion. Kelli will also be helping out as a player/coach for the 2014 season. Other players of note include Kelly Avalos from the Algonquin Thunder and Laurentian's Sarah Sanford, who finished third in OCSL scoring last year.

The age range on the team is between 19 and 25, and the coaching staff has been working to recruit younger players, especially those near the end of their high school careers, to give the team a strong foundation moving forward. To this end, they have been working to split players between the two squads so that both are strong. Some of the players that will be playing with the ERSL U21 team this year under Bernie Harpell's coaching include Mary MacDonald, Kaitlyn Balfour, Miriam Franchetto, Mallory McQueen, Trent's Kelsey White, RMC's Jennifer Bryant, and high school students Amanda Tibbutt from Sydenham and Madison Norman from Holy Cross. Shoshanna Lewis will be backstopping the squad as their 2014 goalkeeper while Rachel Colarossi, forced to retire from playing due to concussion issues, will be starting her coaching career as an assistant for the team, bringing her university experiences as a valuable teaching tool.

On the July 26th weekend, Giacomello and Harpell will be splitting their squads to play in two tournaments here in Kingston, the 29th Annual Kingston Outdoor Senior Soccer Tournament and a CFB Kingston based women's tournament being played at the McNaughton and Hospital fields on the base.

The team will play all of their home games on Sunday afternoons at 4pm out at the John Machin turf field and their away games on Monday nights. Kingston plays their home opener is this Sunday afternoon at 4pm when they face Gloucester. Gloucester is coming off of a 7-0 win over the OSU Force and Kingston off of a 2-1 win over OISC Black on goals from Jessie Deboer on a free kick and Kelli Chamberlain late to clinch the victory after giving up a penalty in the opening minutes of the game.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-28491917124319191412014-05-21T11:39:00.002-04:002014-05-21T11:40:52.341-04:00L1O: Cataraqui Clippers league schedule announced

This afternoon, the Cataraqui Clippers held a press conference at the Ambassador Hotel in Kingston, along with Ron Smale, the president of the Ontario Soccer Association, and Dino Rossi, League1 Ontario chairman and OSA board member.

The conference was used to make a formal announcement to the Kingston (and area) media and to show off some of the players that will be playing with their League1 Ontario team this summer.

Ron Smale opened the session by noting that Kingston had a very important role in the Ontario Soccer Association's plans, both with League1 Ontario and the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL), and said that the OSA was working with the local district to facilitate the presence of a local OPDL franchise in the future. He also pointed out that Kingston was playing a key role in development of the game.

Dino Rossi discussed how the process began three years prior and stated that while Canada does a good job of providing the opportunity to play the game of soccer, there is a gap that high level athletes face in their pathway to the top levels that needs to be closed, one which League1 Ontario takes great strides to do by fulfilling the aim of having grassroots all the way to the top levels within a single organization, something that the Cataraqui Clippers will fulfill.

Chris Eveleigh, Technical Directors of the Cataraqui Clippers and head coach of their League1 Ontario team, said that they were hoping that this would not only be an opportunity for high level players to play, but would serve as inspiration to younger players in the organization and give them an end-goal to work towards.

Jason Massie, assistant coach of the team and one of the players, had nothing more to say than he was eagerly looking forward to the pre-season beginning.

It was stressed by Mr. Rossi that it is critical to League1 Ontario that it is not a GTA-based program, and that having Windsor at one end of the province and Kingston at the other was a stepping stone to having a wider spread across the province. Mr. Smale also mentioned that the OSA was working on the process to launch a women's division in 2015.

One big thing to note is that there are soccer academies involved in League1 Ontario, and the question about the challenge of including them in the organization was raised. Mr. Smale responded that he did not view it as a challenge, but rather as an opportunity. The aim is to unify the provincial bodies and the academies into a larger organization. This has not been completely successful, especially at the youth levels, but he felt that the OSA Board of Directors was learning as they went along. He felt that having three academies involved to date was an excellent start to the two groups becoming more involved.

The league is sanctioned as a professional league with high standards. The expectation is that many teams will operate at the amateur level this year, and the league is not forcing teams to require professional contracts for players.
League1 Ontario has a U23 focus, and eight players in the 18-player game roster are required to be U23 players, and four must be in the starting lineup. The aim is to give young Canadians the opportunity to compete, and to this effect, only three non-Canadian players are allowed on a roster, with Windsor and Kingston being allowed four.

Future plans for League1 Ontario include working with the Quebec professional league, the Première Ligue de Soccer du Québec (PLSQ), by looking to hold some type of interprovincial competition similar to the current Ontario-Quebec Cup that is held annually for youth players. It was also stressed that League1 Ontario meets all of the NCAA requirements so that no player will lose any eligibility at that level.

Chris Eveleigh also announced that the League1 Ontario team would be training regularly with the Clippers' U17 team that is playing in the OYSL this summer, and that they would be playing two friendlies this weekend, one tomorrow night against the U17 team, and one on Sunday afternoon at 5pm against Ottawa South United at the Invista turf field.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-60397088091623904982014-04-23T10:18:00.000-04:002014-04-23T10:18:15.794-04:00CSL: Kingston FC 2014 final schedule

This past weekend, the Queen's Men's Soccer team hosted their annual Spring Invitational tournament for U17 and U18 boys teams at Tindall Field on the main Queen's campus.

Twelve teams from across Ontario competed at this year's tournament, with eight in the U17 division, including two from Kingston, and four in the U18 division.

The Cataraqui Clippers U17 OYSL team and a Kingston United U17 team competed in Group 2 of the U17 competition, and the Clippers represented themselves very well on the day, despite being short on player numbers.

The weekend opened with the Clippers facing the Darlington Dragons in the tournament's opener and Clippers defeated the Dragons 2-1 on goals from Branden Raymond and Josh Barrett. Kingston United did not fare quite so well in the second game of the day, dropping a 4-0 decision to the West Rouge Storm.

The two Kingston teams faced off at 4:40pm, and Clippers squeaked out a 1-0 win on a very late goal from Barrett, setting up a winner-takes-all game against West Rouge at 9:40am on Sunday morning, while Kingston United was relegated to playing for pride against the Darlington Dragons at noon.

The West Rouge Storm continued their domination at the tournament against the Clippers, downing them 2-0 and claiming a spot in the U17 final at 3:30pm, against Erin Mills SC. Erin Mills SC had defeated Kleinburg Nobleton 1-0 in their opener, Barrie FC 1-0 in the late game on Saturday, and then downed the Ottawa Fury in kicks from the mark after drawing 1-1. The final was taken by the West Rouge Storm by a 2-0 scoreline, marking them as the U17 tournament winners.

On the U18 side, there were no Kingston teams involved, and the competition was between Cumberland Cobras, Kleinburg Nobleton U18, North Mississauga, and Mount Hamilton. The competition on the U18 side was fierce, with only one game being decided by more than a single goal, when the Ottawa Fury defeated Kleinburg by a 2-0 scoreline. Four of the games required penalty kicks to determine a winner, eventually leaving Mount Hamilton to face North Mississauga in the final.

North Mississauga had defeated Mount Hamilton 1-0 in round robin play, but Mount Hamilton had their revenge in the final, downing North Mississauga by a 4-0 scoreline to take the U18 championship.
As the snow begins to melt and the grass (and turf) underneath begins to become visible and obvious, outdoor seasons are and tournaments are starting to warm up the turf in the Kingston area.

This past weekend, one of the last indoor tournaments took place, the Queen's High School indoor invitational, out at the Kingston 1000 Islands Sportsplex in Westbrook.

On the boys side, St. Pius X from Ottawa repeated as the boys champions with a 2-0 victory over Cornwall's St. Joseph's. Eight teams started pool play with St. Pius X and St. Joseph's finishing first in their respective divisions and a bye to the
semi finals. St. Joseph's beat Belleville's Bayside 1-0 in the semis to advance to the final. St. Pius beat Pickering's Pine Ridge 2-0 in the semi finals on their way to the championship.

The girls side saw another repeat champion, also from Ottawa, as St. Francis Xavier HS won in a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Alliston's Banting Memorial. Thirteen teams started pool play with St. Francis Xavier, Banting Memorial and Whitby's Donald A Wilson capturing their respective divisions. Banting Memorial reached the final with a 1-0 quarter final victory over Smiths Falls, and a 1-0 semi final victory over Donald Wilson. St. Francis Xavier beat Bayside 3-1 in the quarter finals, and Pine Ridge 4-0 in the semi finals on their way to capturing the title.
This coming weekend features the annual Queen's Invitational Boys U17/U18 tournament. It will be played on Tindall Field on main campus on Saturday and Sunday. The Clippers U17 OYSL team will be participating in this tournament along with teams from Darlington, West Rouge, and Kingston United.
That leads into the annual KCVI Invitational High School tournaments next week on Tuesday, April 15th for the girls and Wednesday, April 16th for the boys. These games will be at Tindall and Nixon Fields on main campus and will likely also feature some games out at the West Campus Turf Field, if last year's event is anything to go by.

These tournaments serve as warmups to the Kingston High School season, which will start on Tuesday, April 22nd and will be played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on Tindall Field, the West Campus Turf Field, and the Invista Field with kickoffs beginning at 12:30pm each day.

Of course, the biggest news coming out this week is that the Cataraqui Clippers will be playing in League1 Ontario (L1O) for the 2014 season, with their games out at St. Lawrence College.
What has flown a bit more under the radar is the news that the OSA's Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) will be holding five game dates here in Kingston, all located at Queen's University. The Eastern Division features Ottawa South, Whitby, North Toronto, Nepean Hotspurs, Markham, Pickering, West Ottawa, Toronto FC (Boys only), and Ottawa Fury (Girls only). The OPDL is a new top level U13 league which has the goal of building towards the League1 Ontario system. The game dates in Kingston will be May 3, May 10, Jun 14, Aug 16, and Aug 23. The games will kick off at 10am, and be played every two hours with the fourth game kicking off at 4pm.

As the outdoor season approaches, the indoor seasons wrap up...
This afternoon, the Ontario Soccer Association officially unveiled their League1 Ontario (L1O) competition beginning this summer, and here in Kingston, it was revealed that the Cataraqui Clippers were one of the ten inaugural teams taking part, playing as the Kingston Cataraqui Clippers.

The official announcement and presentation took place this afternoon at the OSA's Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario and was attended by the Cataraqui Clippers' technical director Chris Eveleigh and former Kingston FC player, Jason Massie.

Dino Rossi, OSA Board member and chairman of League1 Ontario stated "Our main goal for this league is to fill the talent gap in our soccer system." Benito Floro, head coach of the Canadian Men's National Team stated that, "for us, this league is the future of Canadian soccer."

I spoke with Chris Eveleigh last week about the Clippers' plans for their upcoming season, which will begin May 31, 2014 at 11am at the Ontario Soccer Centre against the MFA Saints. This competition will be the top level of sanctioned competitions in the province of Ontario, and the Clippers have withdrawn their second place finishing team from the OCSL's Men's C1 division from 2013 in order to field their League1 Ontario team.

The league will kick off on Friday, May 30 at 8pm at the OSA's Soccer Centre with a match between the TFC Academy and Vaughan Azzurri. The Clippers are hoping to have home games on the weekends of their Ambassador Cup tournaments, July 5th and July 19th, as well as their Soccerfest weekend, June 21st.

The team currently has a core of ten players and is looking to finalize their roster of eighteen after open tryouts at the Invista turf field on the evening of Tuesday, April 22. This tryout is open and free of charge, but you must RSVP to Chris Eveleigh in advance.
The coaching staff for the Clippers is led by Eveleigh, a UEFA B licensed coach, and he will be assisted by Massie, assistant Clippers technical director and a former Kingston FC player who also coaches with the Liverpool FC International Soccer Schools and Global Premier Soccer. Massie holds his FA Level 1 and is beginning his pre-B license in June.

Eveleigh's main goal for the team is to make it a "community team," and by that, he refers to sponsors, players, and coaches primarily. His hope is that all of the team's players will be from Kingston and its surrounding areas. They are also looking to use players from within their own club, especially the newly promoted OYSL U17 team coached by Mark Stanley, as callups as needed and also draw from the GKSSA, the local men's soccer league. One of the team's sponsors is the Kingston Athletic Therapy Centre, which will be acting as physiotherapists and strength conditioning for the entire club.
The team will be playing at the St. Lawrence College field with their games primarily on Saturday afternoons and gatherings with supporters and families at one of their main sponsors, The Brass Pub near Princess St. and Division St., afterward. League1 Ontario will be dictating the ticket prices, but Clippers are aiming to have a season ticket for adults around the $50 mark.

The ten teams involved in League1 Ontario are mostly located in the Greater Toronto Area for this season, with the Cataraqui Clippers and Winsdor Stars being the outliers. The other teams involved include the Toronto FC Academy, Sigma FC, Vaughan Azzurri, ANB Futbol, Durham Power FC, Masters FA, Internacional de Toronto, and Woodbridge Strikers. This list is notable due to the inclusion of private soccer academies in Toronto FC Academy, Sigma FC, ANB Futbol, Durham Power FC, and Masters FA.

There are plans to expand League1 Ontario to include a women's division, hopefully, by the 2015 season. Whether the Clippers will be involved in that remains to be seen.
The 2014 CSL schedule was quietly released this weekend, shortly in advance of the OSA's League 1 Ontario announcement this Tuesday (April 8, at 2pm ET).

The first division is scheduled to begin on May 24 and wrap up on October 5, while the second division kicks off May 7 and finishes on September 7.

Please note that a revised schedule has since been released.

Based on some of the dates and times (including an overlap in home games), it would seem that the schedule is not completely finalized at this point in time, but does give a good idea as to the plan for each Kingston FC team. As noted previously, the team will be playing at the Queen's West Campus Turf Field near the corner of Johnson St and Sir John A MacDonald Blvd.

The second team has a home opener kickoff on Saturday, May 17 at 4:30pm against the Serbian White Eagles B, while the first team has its home opener on Saturday, May 31st against Niagara United at 6:45pm, following the second team's game against Burlington SC B. As things stand, the first team will be playing an 18 game schedule, while the second team will play a 16 game one.
CSL Chairman and President, Vincent Ursini appeared on Sunday morning's International Sports Report program on TSN 1050 this week to discuss the de-sanctioning of the Canadian Soccer League by the Canadian Soccer Association and their plans moving forward.

The interview came at the tail end of the program and was brief in nature, beginning at about the 1:23:00 mark. In it, Ursini briefly discussed the events of the CSA's expelling the CSL as a member and that the CSL has launched litigation against the CSA to appeal the situation, using the same legal firm as when they appealed the de-sanctioning in 2013.

The legal firm being used is BPR Litigation, based out of Richmond Hill, and with Rocco Ruso and Nick Porco announced as the lawyers on the case.

When asked why the CSA expelled the CSL, Mr. Ursini responded saying, "Well, there isn't a reason. they've stated that we've violated the rules and regulations and I can say that my involvement with the league going back to 1997, the league's never been convicted of a breach of any rules and regulations. We received absolutely no notification except for a letter saying that we were expelled for a breach of the rules which is in total violation of their own rules."

Mr. Ursini was then asked what it mean to be banned and the news about the CSL joining with an American league. He responded stating, "Well, we had prepared for this since a year ago, and so we're prepared to be a private league. We have our referees, and even the statement they made that no sanctioned teams can have any sporting contact with the league, that's not true. The rules provide for friendly games between any teams, sanctioned or unsanctioned. The only issue that's unfortunate is that we were, a late development was this union and negotiation and agreement that we're reaching with the American Professional League [APS]. Now, because they're seeking sanctioning, it's sorta thrown a wrench into the works because that was a huge, huge move for the league and our teams and our youth teams to interact and play cross-border games. So that's one thing that has hurt us, but the league itself, we intended to play all along. Even last year, the fact that the desanctioning, which was wrongful, happened months before our season started. It was important that, first of all, we prove them wrong, and secondly that we had order in the league last year, but we expected all this, we expected not to receive sanctioning from Ontario. I mean, it's ridiculous that up until just before our submission, they'd agreed on exactly what we were submitting, and then once we submitted our application, the answer we received was 'your application is incomplete.' Two emails, a week apart, asking for information, what's missing, rules of appeal. We have received no response. And in fact, even the CSA movement, I think, is basically, was a move because when they reminded us of the desanctioning that was effective February 14th this year, my comment was 'we're well aware of that but we are members in good standing according to CSA rules until the Annual General Meeting in May. Could you please clarify this?' We have received no response and the only communication we received was a letter indicating that we've been expelled because of violations which everyone knows."

When asked about launching litigation, Mr. Ursini confirmed that litigation had been launched to appeal the decision with the CSA and stated, "We have Rocco Ruso and Nick Porco from BPR Litigation that successfully represented us in two cases now and under their advisement, this is very straightforward. Even you don't have to be a lawyer, when an organization doesn't follow their own rules, it's unfortunate. I mean, if we did anything wrong, we're to blame and we'll take the penalty and if we did anything wrong, the first thing we'll try to do is try to correct it, the problem, but we don't know what the issues are."Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-19339844244412932992014-03-21T11:09:00.001-04:002014-03-21T11:10:11.290-04:00Canadian Soccer League website back online, CSL response

Earlier this week, the website of the Canadian Soccer League went entirely offline and the domain became unavailable.

As of late yesterday afternoon, the Canadian Soccer League brought the site back online, though with a number of broken links, at a slightly altered address, canadiansoccerleague.ca

Stan Adamson, Director of Media and PR for the CSL, responded to my inquiries on the matter, laying out the plans for the future of the CSL online.

He stated that the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) owns the canadiansoccerleague.com domain name and "terminated an agreement to share the domain with the CSL, something
we were not prepared for." He noted that the CSL owns the canadiansoccerleague.ca domain name and that the website was being brought online with plans to launch a "new, brighter website for the new season."

He also briefly discussed the CSL's relationship with American Professional Soccer (APS) and the American Soccer League (ASL) stating that the "relationship with the ASL has progressed beyond an agreement to partner
and a number of projects are being discussed for 2014, including what
form the cross-border competition will take place."

The CSL and ASL are expected to make an announcement on the specifics of the partnership soon, but their new website already includes a poster describing "A Perfect Partnership" listing "Great Cross Border Competition", "Youth Player Development", and "World Class Marketing."

In terms of match officials, the CSL has been preparing a list of qualified officials, some of whom are OSA/CSA trained and are doing CSL matches under the
circumstances of the CSL being a private league. Other officials received their qualifications and experience before coming to Canada and are currently working in other non-affiliated leagues according to Adamson.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-52370431736523864552014-03-19T13:35:00.002-04:002014-03-19T15:18:41.544-04:00Canadian Soccer League website vanished?
There were some technical glitches with the site last week as their news feed disappeared a couple of times and their database of news, press releases, and statistics vanished, but nothing as surprising as the domain name no longer existing.

In the latest turn of disconcerting events for the Canadian Soccer League (CSL), this follows an announcement by the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) that "the Canadian Soccer League did not fulfill its member obligations and
violated rules and regulations of the Canadian Soccer Association,
resulting in its expulsion and the cancellation of all rights in
relation to the national governing body." This announcement was made on March 5, 2014 as a result of a meeting of the CSA Board of Directors on February 28, 2014.

When the CSA was asked whether the domain name being taken offline was part of the recent membership removal actions, they responded stating that "the canadiansoccerleague.com shut down is related to the expulsion of the CSL from membership, details of which [we are] not prepared to share."

Further to this, there have been some recent rumblings of the CSL's partnership with American Professional Soccer (APS) and the American Soccer League (ASL) allowing for the possibility of the CSL's being a sanctioned league after all. As things stand, the APS/ASL has applied to the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) for sanctioning and according to Lorne Abugov of Kingston FC, "the CSL partnership is one of the items in the
discussion." The CSA responded to these rumours by stating that "the process to be sanctioned by Canada Soccer remains the same and any new entity wishing to request sanctioning to operate on Canadian soil would have to abide by it."

Finally, there is the possibility of litigation being brought forward by the CSL against the CSA as relates to the removal of membership. When asked about this, Lorne Abugov stated in an email that "with
the way things were done last year, it would definitely be open for the
CSL to pursue legal actions v CSA. Given last year's events, CSL
lawyers would naturally look at process for this year's recent
announcement to ensure that no illegal
procedure was followed." He followed that up noting that Kingston had no knowledge of any current
litigation active or in process of being brought against the CSA, also stating that the club could not comment on it if there was litigation.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-7136156091367054282014-03-19T12:13:00.000-04:002014-04-08T10:56:32.064-04:00CSL: Kingston FC 2014 roster

This past week, Kingston FC announced their roster for the upcoming 2014 CSL season.

The announcement was held in the Queen's Alumni Lounge at the ARC and was presented by main owner Lorne Abugov and three returning players, Joe Zupo (ex-Queen's University captain), Guillaume Surot (CSL 2013 MVP and Golden Boot winner), and Ryan McCurdy (Kingston FC veteran since year one).

Kingston FC, as a franchise, expects to do better this year than last, aiming to finishing top of the table in both the first division and the reserve division (now a fully professional division, and no longer a development division). To this end, the team has signed thirty players to contracts, fifteen of whom are returning from last season.

The returning players are goalkeepers Jaroslav Tesar and Yasuto Hoshiko, Kingston/Queen's players Zupo, Nathan Klemencic, Jordan Brooks, and Jeff Borges, and other roster players such as McCurdy, Surot, Mademba Ba, Catalin Lichioiu, Joey Pineo, Jean-Michel Paulin, Tony El-Asmar, Michael Smith, and last year's captain, Austin White. There will be tryouts held in Kingston on April 16 and 17 with the hopes of bringing the number of rostered players to thirty-four.

The new players on the roster include New Zealander Fergus Neil, who played with Hawke's Bay United from 2009/10 to 2013/14, Bryan Kommerowski, a German who has played with TSV Sasel, Rahlstedter SC, and SC Condor I, Paul Willis, a Scottish player who was with Dunfermline from 2007/08 through to 2012/13 and East Fife this past season, Stephen Hindmarch who has played with Carlisle United, Shrewsbury Town, and Workington AFC, and Adam Shaban (Wesa), who played with the Kenyan national team in the 2004 African Cup and played with Tusker FC and Nybergsund more recently.

Other signed players include Idrissa Dacosta (Girdondins de Bordeaux Academy), Jinmi Ismail (Washington Adventist University - USCAA), Ivica Sunjka (Toronto Croatia - CSL), Odain Simpson (Waterhouse FC/Arnett Gardens FC - Jamaica), José Arana (Mexico), Arvin Nesarhosseini (Iran), and Mamandi Ouattara.

Guillaume Surot stated that he felt that the competition this year would drive the team more and hopes to repeat last year's career year personally. Joe Zupo also discussed his time on trial with Exeter City FC in England over the last few weeks. Overall, he felt that it was a positive experience and discussed training and playing with their U18 squad and playing in a friendly vs Swindon. He also briefly mentioned spending some time in Ireland, but felt that portion of the trip was not as positive as his time with Exeter.

Lorne Abugov also briefly addressed Kingston FC's hopes of working on an affiliation with Fergus Neil's New Zealand team, Hawke's Bay United, with the possibility of being able to take some Kingston FC players there to train or even play during the CSL off-season.

A question was raised about Kingston FC's prior mention of friendlies against the Ottawa Fury FC to be held at Richardson Stadium, and he stated that the team "would
love them to happen, but we understand the governance situation and so
we're leaving it in the hands of possible opponents, including possibly
the NASL and USL Pro clubs during their mid-season break."Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-11360765035012049552014-02-28T10:30:00.000-05:002014-03-04T22:35:07.525-05:00Queen's West Campus noise exemption request (Updated)

Over the last several months, there has been an ongoing issues with local Kingston residents near the Queen's West Campus turf field, located out near Richardson Stadium (corner of Sir John A MacDonald Blvd and Johnson St).

This Tuesday (March 4), Kingston City Council (as part of their agenda) will be receiving a recommendation from City staff as to how an exemption for the noise by-law should be applied to the field.

The report (available online) is a 200+ page report detailing what City staff feel is an acceptable exemption from the current by-laws. These recommendations come out of the various noise complaints received over the past few years (or so), public meetings, and discussion between the relevant parties.

The quick summary of the exemptions recommended are that Richardson Stadium, the North Field and the Turf Field will be exempt from Monday to Thursday between 9am and 11pm, and Friday through Sunday (including statutory holidays) from 9am to 9:30pm. At all times, 10-15 minutes will be allowed for participants to leave the field area safely. There will also be single use occurrences for Friday through Sundays (and holidays) that allow up to 24 extra days per year (Richardson counts as one block, North Field and the Turf Field count have their own block of 24 days) of 11pm deadlines.

For the North and Turf Fields, marching bands are not allowed and amplified sound or announcements may only be used between 9am and 9pm for short periods of time. For marching band use at Richardson, a single occurrence exemption must be used.

Whether this is acceptable to local residents is another question, and a late January article from the Whig-Standard suggests that this may not be the case. Having said that, Queen's held a public town hall meeting last week and invited residents of the neighbourhood for discussion. Combined with discussions with City staff, councillors, and the mayor, the by-law exemption request was made to be more specific before its presentation to City staff earlier this week.

As noted above, the item is on the agenda for Tuesday's City Council meeting and is expected to be heard sometime shortly after 7:30pm.
Update Two

At City Council tonight, the motion was withdrawn for consideration today late in the game to allow for more public consultation before resubmitting the request. In addition, it seems that a petition against granting the exemption was presented with "approximately seven signatures."

Consider me baffled at the use of the word approximately. Is it really that difficult to count to seven? The Ontario Soccer Association and the Referee Development Department announced the leaders for the newly formed Technical Advisory Group (TAG) today. This group is designed to replace the current Instructors and Assessors Advisory Groups for referee development in the province with an eye toward creating more inclusivity and succession planning.

The main goal of this new group was to be a counterpart to the OSA's Technical Advisory Committee, which advises the board of directors on all matters soccer related, but seems to concentrate more on the player and coach development stream.

The main goal of the TAG is to bring together important and key thinkers and leaders within Ontario to work with the Referee Development Department and Referee Development Committee on various priorities as the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) plan is implemented.
The group will consist of six major pillars, those being:

Grassroots and Club Level Programming

Referee Coaching and Mentorship

Advanced Programming

LTPD

Assessment Programming

Instruction and Education Programming

Under each of these pillars, the identified priorities are recruitment and retention, support at the grassroots level, clearer pathways (Pyramid of Play) for Youth to Provincial official development tied to LTPD and Soccer4Life, increased quality and quantity of all programs, offering opportunities for all members to reach their potential, and consistent deliverable education across the province by accredited instructors and an online learning management system.

With these goals in mind, the OSA announced the new TAG leaders today. Included in this list are two local talents, local referee Alison Josselyn, who was chosen to be a co-leader in the Grassroots Programming pillar along with Tom Stuckey, reporting to Karim Kanji, and Belleville Youth Soccer Club admin Stella Haskin, who will be working with Wayne Sharp and reporting to Jack Hughes in the LTPD pillar.

The other leaders include Steve Mortimer (Referee Coaching and Mentorship) with Mark Doughbrough and Mike Bradley, Tony Camacho (Advanced Programming) with Claude Henoud and Marlene Ford, Gord Arrowsmith (Assessment Program) with Peter Kalpouzos and Day Wybo, and Phil Moore (Instruction Program) with John Barrie and Monico Blaney.Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7052952902506603206.post-91337631007169832402014-02-12T11:51:00.000-05:002014-02-12T11:51:23.210-05:00Bill Orme

I'm taking today to do something a bit atypical for this blog, specifically to honour my first ever soccer coach, Bill Orme.

When I first began playing "organized" soccer with the Kingston Youth Soccer Association back in the day, I often played at the McCullough Park fields here in Kingston, which was fairly close to home. My best friend and neighbour Mark Staveley was playing and his dad, Howard Staveley, was one of the two coaches, along with a co-worker of his, Bill Orme. Bill's two sons also played for the team, Will and Steve (and even though Steve was a year or two younger than the rest of us, he definitely wasn't out of place on our motley crew).

As is often the case with youth house league teams, most people were played in positions they disliked horribly (I was played as an outside left striker in modern parlance) and there were one or two great players on the team (I was not one of them), Bill and Howard managed to instill a love of the game in me at a young age, something I'm certain that both of them since regretted!

Unfortunately, Howard died in 1996 at the tender age of 52, and Bill has now joined him in the soccer fields in the sky.

Both Bill and Howard were stalwarts in the Nooners soccer game at Queen's University each and every lunch hour, playing whenever they could. Bill began play in the 1980s and lasted through the 90s and into the early 2000s before a chronic hip problem finally forced his retirement. Despite that, he was the picture of health for his entire life and could often be seen walking about the city with his wife of 42 years, Eden.

To my recollection, Bill had a brief flirtation with playing in the Kingston men's league (the predecessor of what eventually became the GKSSA) with the [Insert-Sponsor-Here] Nooners, but always seemed more interested in the recreational side of the game than the competitive fixtures. At the lunch hour game, he was always cheerful, and rarely had an unkind word to say. Of course, a lot of friendly abuse was directed his way, especially when he pulled his marvelous Brazilian back-heels in front of goal... and into the goal. His own goal.

A long-time employee at Queen's, even after he retired in the mid-90s, he returned almost immediately as a contract worker. When he tired of that, he volunteered far and wide, and continued to keep active in sports as a member of the Kingston Lawn Bowling Club with his wife.

In the spring of 2013, Bill was diagnosed with

Yesterday afternoon, Kingston FC held their 2014 Launch Press Conference at the Queen's ARC in the Alumni Lounge.

The team made several announcements about their upcoming 2014 season, some new ownership interests, a new partnership with Queen's University, and some player news.

They also unveiled their new logo (seen here), a new update done by a Toronto based graphic designer, Jennifer Coghill.

During their discussions, they talked about their objectives for 2014 (and beyond), and what the new governance situation with the Canadian Soccer League (CSL) means for them moving forward.

Lorne Abugov, the majority owner of the team, was the primary presenter at the event and discussed the upcoming season in terms of both his personal objectives and team objectives as Kingston FC moves forward, preparing for the upcoming 2014 soccer season.

On field, Abugov has hopes that the team can repeat as regular season champions and add a post-season trophy to the case. He is also looking to strengthen the reserve/second division team with the hopes of winning both divisions this season. He also reiterated the team's commitment to the Canadian Soccer League moving forward noting that Kingston FC would not be taking part in the OSA's League 1 Ontario at this time. He did not exclude the possibility of looking into that league as an option down the road.

Off the field, Abugov wants to continue to have a positive local presence, including working with local clubs, organizations, and others that want to work with the team. The ultimate goal is to become a very professional organization with financial viability for the longer term.

As part of the financial viability goals, three new local minority (~6%) owners were introduced: Shawn Geary (McCoy Bus
Service & Tours), Catherine MacLeod (Physiotherapy Kingston),
and Belleville businessman Jim Allore. The longer term goal is to expand that to six local minority owners.

Last Friday, the team held invite-only tryouts in Ottawa for close to thirty players. Of these, the team is looking at trying to sign six or seven. These signings will begin in mid-February with CSL Player Contracts being completed at that time. The team hopes to bring back several core members of last year's team, including top CSL goal scorer Guillaume Surot. With expectations of having most of the roster finalized by mid-March, there will be an open tryout held in Kingston in early April to fill the last few spots on the roster with local talent in advance of training camp starting on April 22nd. The CSL season will begin on the weekend of May 24th, and Kingston FC will be playing on the road, with their home opener following on May 31st.

For the 2014 season, Kingston FC will be playing at the Queen's West Campus field again, as part of a new three-year partnership deal with Queen's University. Expanding on the agreements they had in place for the 2013 season, the new deal allows for ticket and merchandise sales online and through the Q-Shop at the Queen's ARC. It also includes the use of facilities for training, both field time and time at the ARC in gyms and fitness rooms.

The most exciting news of the day was the official announcement of Queen's Varsity Men's captain Joe Zupo going on trial with Exeter City FC in England's League Two for the month of February. Go Gaels Go has a full story including a video interview with Joe on the news. The club also announced that Mike Smith and Hugo Delmaire were attending the USL Pro Combine in Florida this week, and that Edgar Soglo, Guillaume Surot, and Jason Massie trialed with Ottawa Fury FC.

The Ottawa Fury FC team is a new NASL team based out of Ottawa that will be starting play this season in the NASL. The NASL has a split season and the Fury are looking at the feasibility of playing an exhibition game in Kingston against Kingston FC during that break which falls between June 8th and July 19th (while the World Cup takes place in Brazil).

There were some discussions on the newly announced Soccer Federation of Canada (SFC), a group that the CSL is apparently one of the driving forces behind. Kingston FC and their ownership have not been directly involved in any of the discussions to this point. The SFC is working with a new federation in the United States and a new professional league named the ASL (American Professional Soccer). Kingston FC will be "twinned" with a team in this league and will be looking to play a home and home series in August and September, with the September game being held in Kingston. The SFC and CSL will be holding logistical meetings with the ASL in Niagara Falls in late February to firm up the specific details of their partnership.

From Abugov's understanding, the SFC is for unaffiliated clubs, leagues, and players, and will not be focused on governance like the CSA and OSA currently are. It will provide insurance for teams and players, similar to the current Canadian associations. He also indicated that the CSL was choosing to operate as a private league, similar to MLB, the NBA, and the NHL.

What this new Soccer Federation of Canada means to the actual play of games and referee situations is still unclear, and it is unclear if (or how) it will affect Kingston FC's interactions with OSA clubs in the Greater Kingston area. It also is unclear if it will affect future player movement, such as trials with professional teams abroad, combine events similar to those run by USL Pro and MLS. It could also affect the feasibility of the proposed exhibition game with the Ottawa Fury this summer.

Regardless, the possible effects have not yet been addressed by either the CSA or the SFC to this point in time and it remains to be seen whether the two groups will be able to work together or not.

Happy Canada Day everyone! I'm writing this at just past midnight making it officially Canada Day for me here in Raciborz, Poland. So proud to be representing my country, but on this day it's exceptionally special!
Since my last entry, we finished our stay in Wroclaw with a couple more sessions. A few of these were on the field, and a couple were video review meetings. Again, doing some excellent work as a group reviewing game tape and going through tactics so that when we get into a field session, we can apply what we've discussed right away into realistic situations.

We also did a little bit of team bonding and goal setting. In addition to coming together as athletes, we need to mesh well as a group, putting personalities together and creating an atmosphere in which we can succeed. So, for a little team bonding exercise, our head coach Liz Jepsen put her iTunes library on shuffle and we had to guess which song was playing. Very fun times! We then went on to some goal setting to make sure we are all on the same page in terms of what we expect from ourselves and one another. Very useful stuff!

We then travelled to our current hotel in Raciborz, being generously hosted by the Polish F. A. to face one of their top premier teams, Unia Raciborz. After the sessions we had, we were able to apply a lot more solid tactical play to this match, which we ended up tying 2-2. It was personally a strong game for me as I had the privilege of acting as captain (we haven't chosen final captains yet), going on to score twice, my first two goals for a national team!

Today, we had another field session, continuing to work on shape and tactics, and had an evening video session reviewing the game against Unia Raciborz. I am now all packed up in my hotel room and ready to leave at 2am for Berlin, then Moscow and finally Kazan at 11pm tonight. It is going to be a long night/day, but we could not be prouder to be representing our country on Canada Day!
I spoke with Jackie just before she was heading off to Berlin and asked what it felt like to score her first goal for her country and she said that it felt "pretty great, but I didn't realize the importance of that goal in my life until later. Today is our third day in Wroclaw, Poland where we are holding our training camp. We arrived here on June 25 after a very long day/night of travel. So far, we have had two sessions as a team as well as a friendly match against the Polish WNT. We unfortunately lost that game 4-0, but it was truly an honour to play for my country in that game. It was a really special moment to walk out as one of the starting 11 and hear our national anthem play in an international friendly.

The sessions have been going well for what we've done so far. Other than tryouts in BC, this is the first few days playing all together. Coming from all over Canada means bringing together all different styles of play and tactics that need to mesh together into our final product. It is coming along slowly but surely, as all the girls here are extremely knowledgeable, talented and willing to lead where they can. We had a meeting with the strikers this morning to discuss yesterday's match, and the discussion was so productive and useful as everyone had really good input and ideas.

Personally, I am feeling pretty good out here. Pretty well adjusted to the new time zone and the food! Looking forward to continuing to grow as a player and as a team throughout my/our time here. We have a video/tactical meeting later tonight, but for now, off into downtown Wroclaw for some leisure time and sightseeing!Alex Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00262538690762505685noreply@blogger.com0
